As for the prayer of the sick, he says: “Jabir reported that the Prophet ﷺ visited a sick man and found him praying on a cushion. The Prophet threw it aside and said, ‘Pray on the ground if you can; if not, gesture with signs, and make your prostration lower than your bowing.’ Al-Bayhaqi narrated it, and Abu Hatim authenticated the mawquf form.”
I say: Ibn Hajar challenged Abu Hatim in al-Talkhis, noting that three reliable transmitters related it as marfuʿ, which shows that the correct version is the marfuʿ one—and he was right.
The report, however, has another flaw: Abu ’l-Zubayr’s tadlis from Jabir, as I explained in my Takhrij Sifat Salat al-Nabi ﷺ. Even so, it comes through additional routes and has a corroborating narration with an authentic chain from Ibn ʿUmar. There is therefore no doubt that the hadith is soundly traceable to the Prophet ﷺ, as I clarified there, and I later included it in al-Sahihah, no. 323.
