Under the section on the Dawn Prayer … and again under the section on the Prayer of Glorification (Ṣalāt al-Tasbīḥ) he writes, after quoting its ḥadith:
“Al-Ḥāfiẓ said: ‘This ḥadith has come down through numerous chains and from a group of Companions …’—up to his words—‘and our shaykh, the ḥāfiẓ Abū al-Ḥasan al-Maqdisī, may Allah have mercy on him.’”
I say: The scholarly convention is that, when the title “al-Ḥāfiẓ” is left unqualified, what is meant is Aḥmad ibn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī, may Allah have mercy on him, and that is how the author himself uses it elsewhere. Here, however, the reference is not to Ibn Ḥajar but to al-Ḥāfiẓ al-Mundhirī, for the quoted passage is his statement in al-Targhīb 1/238. The author should therefore have specified this to avert confusion. A similar lapse will appear later at the beginning of the “Zakāh” section, page 357.
