In his treatment of making up the two confirmed Sunnah cycles that precede Dhuhr, he cites the report: “Ibn Mājah relates from her that she said: ‘Whenever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ missed the four rakʿahs before Dhuhr, he would perform them after the two rakʿahs that follow Dhuhr.’”
I say: He passed over this ḥadith in silence, giving the impression that it is sound, whereas it is not. The report comes through Qays ibn al-Rabīʿ. Al-Ḥāfiẓ says in al-Taqrīb: “Reliable, but he became confused in old age, and his son inserted into his narrations material that was not his, and he then transmitted it.”
Moreover, Qays alone is responsible for the wording “after the two rakʿahs.” This is an irregular addition, for al-Tirmidhī transmitted the same ḥadith through a different, sound chain from her without that clause; it is the narration cited in the book just prior to this discussion. I reinforced the flawed nature of the Ibn Mājah report in al-Ṣaḥīḥa (al-Ḍaʿīfa) 4208, where I also pointed out the inadvertence of the commentator on al-Zād who deemed Ibn Mājah’s ḥadith ḥasan by appealing to al-Tirmidhī’s version—when in fact the latter should have led him to weaken it!!
