Thereafter I traced these chains along with their supporting narrations in Irwāʾ al-Ghalīl, no. 412.
Regarding the recommendation to perform it at home, he writes:
- Aḥmad relates—from ʿUmar—that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “A man’s voluntary prayer in his house is light; whoever wishes may illuminate his house.”
I say: the isnād of this report is weak; it contains an unknown narrator. I have detailed this in al-Taʿlīq al-Raghīb 1/159 and again in Takhreej al-Aḥādīth al-Mukhtārah, pp. 248–249.
And he says:
- ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Perform some of your prayers in your homes and do not turn them into graves.” Recorded by Aḥmad and Abū Dāwūd.
I say: the compiler has ranged far afield, for this ḥadith is likewise found in both Ṣaḥīḥ collections on the authority of Ibn ʿUmar, and it also appears in Ṣaḥīḥ Abī Dāwūd, no. 1027.
