His words: 17. Abū Dāwūd and al-Ḥākim have reported that the Prophet ﷺ used to say after every prayer: “Allāhumma ʿāfinī fī badanī …”
I say: I do not know where the author obtained this citation, for I have not found it with the stipulation “after every prayer” in the works he named, nor in its full wording in al-Ḥākim. The details are as follows:
First: Abū Dāwūd recorded it in the Book of Manners, 5090, through the route of Jaʿfar ibn Maymūn, who said: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Bakrah related to me that he said to his father, “Father! I hear you every morning supplicating:
‘Allāhumma ʿāfinī fī badanī, Allāhumma ʿāfinī fī samʿī, Allāhumma ʿāfinī fī baṣarī, lā ilāha illā Ant’ (O Allah, grant my body well-being; O Allah, grant my hearing well-being; O Allah, grant my sight well-being; there is no god but You). You repeat it three times when morning comes and three times when evening comes.”
He replied, “I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ making these supplications, so I love to follow his sunnah. And you also say:
‘Allāhumma innī aʿūdhu bika min al-kufr wa’l-faqr, Allāhumma innī aʿūdhu bika min ʿadhāb al-qabr, lā ilāha illā Ant’ (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from unbelief and poverty; O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the torment of the grave; there is no god but You). You repeat it three times when morning comes and three times when evening comes. Therefore supplicate with them, for I love to follow his sunnah.”
Through this same route it was recorded by al-Nasāʾī in ʿAmal al-Yawm wa’l-Laylah, no. 22 – 572, by Ibn al-Sunnī, no. 67, and by Aḥmad, 5/42. Al-Nasāʾī said, “Jaʿfar ibn Maymūn is not strong.”
I say: Opinion concerning him is divided; al-Ḥāfiẓ said, “Truthful, but he makes mistakes.”
Accordingly, the chain is ḥasan—or close to ḥasan.
Second: Al-Ḥākim recorded it, 1/35, in a very abridged form through another route: from Ḥammād ibn Salamah, from ʿUthmān al-Shahhām, from Muslim ibn Abī Bakr, from Abū Bakrah, who said: “I heard …”
