Tamam al-MinnahNasir al-Din al-Albani

and the question of “kneading” with them as well; both issues fall under the heading of your section, “How to Rise in the Prayer.” Had that not been so, you would not have darkened so many pages of your section with an extended rehearsal of Mālik’s report and its wording, of Wāʾil’s report with its five routes as you list them and its ten versions—one of which speaks of leaning on the knees and thighs, contrary to Mālik’s report—something that led you to voice open doubt about Mālik’s report proving reliance on the hands, as we quoted from you earlier. Yet here you are—whether you sense it or not—back to acknowledging that Mālik’s report does indicate leaning on the hands, putting it on the same footing as this report from Ibn ʿUmar. You have further affirmed our statement that the wording plainly shows Ibn ʿUmar did so in conformity with the sunnah, not out of senility or weakness. All praise is due to Allah, who inspired you to return to the truth after all the misgivings and strenuous effort!

But did the esteemed professor remain firm upon that truth once Allah had granted it to him?

I regret to say that he later went back to claiming that Ibn ʿUmar did it only because of the constraints of old age (pp. 72, 92), thereby denying what he had earlier acknowledged, despite the testimony of Ibn ʿUmar’s son and those who sat with him: “He did not do it because of advanced age; rather, that is how it ought to be.” Allah alone is the One whose help is sought.

For that reason we sincerely call upon the author to stand fast on the indication of Mālik’s report—that supporting oneself with the hands was not due to incapacity, weakness, or old age, but because it is the sunnah—just as in the report of Ibn ʿUmar whose authenticity and purport he has admitted. Indeed, I have come across yet another chain for him, from al-Azraq ibn Qays, who said:

“I saw Ibn ʿUmar in prayer supporting himself when he rose. I asked, ‘What is this?’ He replied, ‘I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) do it.’”

It was recorded by al-Ṭabarānī in al-Awsat, 3489 (my numbering).
