Among the material on the prayer, he writes under the heading “Its Rank in Islam”:
“ʿAbd Allah ibn Qurṭ reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, ‘The first matter about which a servant will be taken to account ….’ Related by al-Ṭabarānī.”
I say: The author copied this wording from al-Targhīb, where it is indeed cited from the Musnad of ʿAbd Allah ibn Qurṭ. Al-Haythamī, however, in al-Majmaʿ, attributed it to the Musnad of Anas ibn Mālik, and al-Suyūṭī followed him in al-Jāmiʿ. This second attribution is correct, for Ḍiyāʾ al-Maqdisī narrated the report with these very words in the Musnad of Anas within al-Aḥādīth al-Mukhtārah through the chain of al-Ṭabarānī and others. I authenticated it in al-Ṣaḥīḥah, 1358. I later found it again in al-Ṭabarānī’s al-Muʿjam al-Awsat, 3/100–101 (Islamic University microfilm no. 2046 according to my own pagination).
