‘My father entered while I was performing a bath on a Friday and asked, “Is this bath for janābah (major ritual impurity) or for Friday?” I replied, “For janābah.” He said, “Perform another bath, for I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: ‘Whoever bathes on Friday remains in a state of purity until the next Friday.’”’
Al-Ḥākim remarked, “This is a sound hadith according to the criteria of the Two Shaykhs,” and al-Dhahabī concurred. Had Abū Qatādah believed that one bath could suffice for both purposes, he would not have ordered him to repeat a separate bath for Friday; instead he would have said, “Include within your bath for janābah the intention for the Friday bath as well.”
Yet the authenticity of the chain just cited is open to question. Yaḥyā ibn Abī Kathīr is a mudallis and reports it with an ʿanʿanah, and within the chain also stands Hārūn ibn Muslim al-ʿAjlī, who is not among the transmitters relied upon by al-Bukhārī and Muslim—indeed, none of the Six Books narrate from him. After quoting the hadith, however, al-Ḥākim said of him: “Reliable; Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal and ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar al-Qawārīrī reported from him.” Several others likewise transmitted from him, Ibn Ḥibbān listed him among the trustworthy, and both he and Ibn Khuzaymah included a narration of his in their Ṣaḥīḥs, as recorded in al-Tahdhīb. Abū Ḥātim said, “He is soft,” while al-Ḥāfiẓ stated in al-Taqrīb, “Ṣadūq” (truthful).
Accordingly, the hadith appears to be at least ḥasan. Al-Ṭabarānī also transmitted it through the same route in al-Awsat, as cited in al-Majmaʿ 2/174, saying: “Its chain contains Hārūn ibn Muslim; Abū Ḥātim said he is soft, whereas al-Ḥākim and Ibn Ḥibbān declared him reliable, and the remaining narrators are trustworthy.”
