- Bathing after regaining consciousness.
ʿĀʾishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: “When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ grew gravely ill he asked, ‘Have the people prayed?’ We replied, ‘Not yet; they are waiting for you, Messenger of Allah.’ He then said, ‘Pour water for me into the wash-basin.’ I did so, and he bathed, but when he sought to rise he fainted. When he came to, he again asked, ‘Have the people prayed?’ We replied, ‘Not yet; they are waiting for you, Messenger of Allah.’ He said, ‘Pour water for me into the wash-basin.’ We complied, and he bathed, but when he tried to stand he fainted once more. When he recovered he said, ‘Have the people prayed?’ We replied, ‘Not yet; they are waiting for you, Messenger of Allah.’” She then mentioned his sending to Abū Bakr and the remainder of the narration. Agreed upon, as cited in al-Muntaqā under “Chapter: The bath of one who has been unconscious when he awakens.”
Al-Shawkānī remarked (1/212): “The compiler quoted this report here to show that bathing after unconsciousness is recommended. The Prophet ﷺ did so three times despite his severe illness, which proves the strength of the recommendation.”
- Bathing after burying a polytheist.
ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that he came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, “Abū Ṭālib has died.” The Prophet replied, “Go and bury him.” When I had interred him and returned, he said to me, “Perform a bath.” Al-Nasaʾī and others transmitted it with a sound chain; another sound chain also exists containing additional details. I quoted both versions in discussion 79, section “b,” of my book Funeral Rulings, which I have recently completed—then, by Allah’s grace through which all good works are perfected, it was published.
