Tamam al-MinnahNasir al-Din al-Albani

I add: This was likewise the position of ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib, may Allah be pleased with him. Al-Bayhaqī (1/288) and al-Ṭaḥāwī in Sharḥ al-Maʿānī (1/58) relate—on the authority of Abū Ẓubyān—that he saw ʿAlī, may Allah be pleased with him, relieve himself while standing, then call for water, perform ablution, wipe over his sandals, enter the mosque, remove the sandals, and pray; al-Bayhaqī adds: “and he led the people in prayer.” Both chains are sound according to the criteria of the two Shaykhs.

This narration is clear proof of the permissibility of wiping over sandals, a practice that has also been authentically reported from the Prophet ﷺ in the aḥādīth cited earlier.
