from those he met.¹
I have found yet another defect in the report, namely that it is mawqūf (halted at the Companion). Ibn Abī Shaybah records it in al-Muṣannaf, 1/297, through the route of Abū Burdah, who said: “Whenever Abū Mūsā finished his prayer he would say, ‘Allāhumma ighfir lī dhanbī, wa yassir lī amrī, wa bārik lī fī rizqī’ (O Allah, forgive me my sin, ease my affair, and bless my provision).” Its chain is sound, which indicates that the narration is originally mawqūf, that it cannot legitimately be raised to the Prophet, and that—if authentic—it belongs to the supplications recited after the prayer.
The annotator of Zād al-Maʿād overlooked this point: following al-Nawawī he declared the chain sound, then criticized the author of Zād al-Maʿād for listing the hadith among the supplications of the prayer, saying, “We have not seen anyone who included it among the prayer-time supplications as the author has done!” Yet the very supplication contained in the hadith has a corroborating narration that I cited in Ghāyat al-Marām, p. 85; therefore invoking it without restricting it to the prayer or to ablution is acceptable, and for that reason I included it in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Jāmiʿ, 1276. Some of our brothers, however, missed this and placed it under what is to be said during ablution or during the prayer—the uncertainty here is mine—and I do not presently have their treatise at hand.
His statement under number 16 reads: “As for the supplication ‘Allāhumma’jʿalnī mina-t-tawwābīn wajʿalnī mina-l-mutatahirīn’ (O Allah, make me among those who repent and make me among those who purify themselves), it appears in the narration of al-Tirmidhī, who said about the report: ‘Its isnād is inconsistent, and nothing substantial therein is sound.’”
I reply: this wording suggests that the above supplication occurs in a hadith reported only by al-Tirmidhī, who then criticized it for inconsistency, whereas in reality the original narration is in Muslim and others, on the authority of ʿUmar, and the author himself cited it immediately before these words. Al-Tirmidhī also transmitted it and added to it
