Rather, it has only been transmitted through Abu Hazim from Abu Hurayrah in an abridged form, and through Nuʿaym ibn al-Mujmir from him in a version more complete than either of the two just mentioned. Its wording runs: “…then he washed his right arm until he entered the upper arm, then his left arm until he entered the upper arm; he then wiped his head; he then washed his right foot until he entered the shin, then his left foot until he entered the shin. He then said: ‘This is how I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ perform ablution.’ He added: ‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: You will appear on the Day of Resurrection with radiant faces and limbs because of perfecting ablution, so whoever can…’”—and so on to the end of the hadith.
Abu ʿAwānah likewise recorded it in his Ṣaḥīḥ 1/243, but he did not explicitly trace the final sentence back to the Prophet ﷺ; and Allah knows best.
His statement under supplication no. 15 reads: “None of the supplications for ablution is authenticated from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ except the hadith of Abu Musa al-Ashʿari, who said: I brought the Messenger of Allah ﷺ water for ablution; he performed it, and I heard him supplicate, saying: ‘O Allah, forgive me my sin, expand for me my home, and bless my provision.’ I said, ‘Messenger of Allah, I heard you invoke such-and-such.’ He replied, ‘Have I left anything out?’” It was related by al-Nasaʾi and Ibn al-Sunni with a sound chain.
I say: We have several observations on this. First: the hadith does not belong to the remembrances of ablution; rather, it concerns the remembrances of prayer, as evidenced by the report of Imām Aḥmad in the Musnad and of his son ʿAbdullāh in his Zawāʾid. They both relate—through ʿAbdullāh ibn Muḥammad ibn Abī Shaybah: “ʿAbdullāh ibn Muḥammad ibn Abī Shaybah told us; Muʿtamir ibn Sulaymān narrated to us from ʿAbbād ibn ʿAbbād from Abū Mijlaz, from Abu Musa”—in an abridged form with the wording: “He performed ablution, prayed, and then said: O Allah….” Al-Ḥāfiẓ has already remarked on this in his Amālī ʿalā al-Adhkār:
