Fifth Principle: Our Knowledge of What Allah has disclosed about Himself
Whatever Allah has informed us about His own Self is, from one angle, known to us, and from another, unknown. It is known with regard to its meaning, yet unknown with regard to its modality—how it is in reality.
-
That it is knowable to us in terms of meaning is proven by both revelation and reason.
• As for the proofs from revelation, they include His words: “This is a blessed Book which We have sent down to you so that they may reflect upon its verses and that those endowed with insight may take heed” (Surah Ṣād 38:29); His words: “Do they not, then, contemplate the Quran? Had it been from anyone other than Allah, they would surely have found in it much inconsistency” (Surah al-Nisāʾ 4:82); and His words: “Do they not contemplate the Quran, or are there locks upon their hearts?” (Surah Muḥammad 47:24).
• In addition, the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—said, “The best of you are those who learn the Quran and teach it.”
