become a cause for their deeds to be nullified and for them to be forsaken. Such people are weaker than the group before them, lower in rank, and less just, because their witnessing of the station of Godhood overwhelms their witnessing of the station of Lordship.
- The third group consists of those who have failed to realize the two foundations that pertain to the command. They are feeble in remaining upright upon Allah’s directives and in following His law, yet they possess strength in seeking Allah’s help and placing their trust in Him. That trust, however, may be exercised in matters that Allah neither loves nor approves. Accordingly, they are aided and granted success in proportion to their state, and they are given unveilings and influences that do not accrue to the previous group. All the same, whatever they receive is a share allotted to this immediate, worldly life; as for their final outcome, it is an evil one, for they are not among the God-fearing—and the final outcome belongs only to the God-fearing.
Allah the Exalted says: “When they board a ship they call upon Allah, sincere to Him in religion; but when He delivers them safely to land, behold, they associate others with Him, so that they may be ungrateful for what We have given them and take their enjoyment. But soon they will know.” (Q 29:65-66)
Allah knows that these people will lapse into associating others with Him after He rescues them, yet while they are at sea they are sincere in their plea for deliverance and genuine in consigning their affair to Him, so their request is granted. Because they possess no true worship, however, their affair does not remain upright, and the end of their affair is loss.
The difference between them and the group that preceded them is that the earlier group had a weak religion owing to their weakness in seeking Allah’s help and relying upon Him, yet that religion endures unless its possessor ruins it through incapacity or panic. The present group, by contrast, possesses a spiritual state and a certain power, but nothing of it endures except what accords with the command and follows the sunnah.
