Taqrib al-TadmuriyyahIbn al-'Uthaymin

• Another proof is the narration found in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim on the authority of Abū Hurayrah ⦗may Allah be pleased with him⦘, who reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Allah, the Exalted, declares: ‘I am the One most free of any need for partners. Whoever performs a deed in which he associates someone else with Me, I abandon him and his act of association.’”

• Proofs for the requirement of following the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from the Book of Allah include His words: “This is My straight path, so follow it, and do not follow other ways lest they lead you away from His path” (6:153); “Whoever seeks a religion other than Islām, it will never be accepted from him, and in the Hereafter he will be among the losers” (3:85); and His description of the Prophet ﷺ: “Those who believe in him, honor him, support him, and follow the light that has been sent down with him—it is they who will prosper” (7:157), along with many other verses of varied import.

• Among the proofs from the Sunnah is the report recorded by al-Bukhārī and Muslim from ʿĀʾishah ⦗may Allah be pleased with her⦘: the Prophet ﷺ said, “Whoever performs an act that is not in accordance with our matter, it is rejected”—meaning, it will be turned back.

In another authentic narration Muslim collected from Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allah ⦗may Allah be pleased with him⦘ that when the Prophet ﷺ delivered the Friday sermon he would say: “To proceed: the best speech is the Book of Allah, and the best guidance is the guidance of Muhammad; the worst of matters are those newly introduced, and every innovation is misguidance.”

It is likewise authentically reported that he ﷺ said: “Whoever among you lives after me will see great disagreement. Therefore, hold fast to my sunnah and the sunnah of the rightly guided caliphs after me; cling to it with your molars. Beware of newly introduced matters, for every innovation is misguidance.” This was narrated by Aḥmad and Abū Dāwūd.

Following the Messenger is not realized unless the act of worship accords with the Sacred Law in six respects: its underlying reason, its type, its quantity, its manner, its time, and its place.
