A corroborating narration from the Sunnah:
The corroboration from the Sunnah is the report recorded by Ahmad (6/398) through the route of Mansur al-Kalbi, from Dihyah ibn Khalifah (may Allah be pleased with him). He relates that he left his village for a place near the village of ʿUqbah during Ramadan, whereupon he broke his fast and a number of people broke theirs with him, while others were unwilling to do so. When he returned to his village he said, “By Allah, today I have witnessed something I never imagined I would see: a group of people have turned away from the guidance of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and of his Companions.” He said this about those who had insisted on fasting, and then he prayed, “O Allah, take me unto You.”
Abu Dawud also recorded the narration (no. 2413).
I say: The transmitters of its chain are reliable—cited as authorities in the two Sahihs—apart from this Mansur. Al-ʿIjli said of him in Kitab al-Thiqat⦗1⦘, “An Egyptian Successor, trustworthy,” and Ibn Hibban likewise declared him reliable, listing him in al-Thiqat (1/124). However, Ibn al-Madini and others labeled him “unknown,” and that is the correct assessment.
