In al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr 12/101–102, nos. 12598 and 12599, it is transmitted through Sufyān from ʿAlī ibn Badhīmah. Sufyān said, “I asked ʿAlī ibn Badhīmah, ‘What is the kūbah?’ He replied, ‘The drum.’”
A second chain comes by way of ʿAbd al-Karīm al-Jazarī from Qays ibn Ḥubtar, with the wording, “Allah has forbidden them wine, gambling, and the kūbah”—that is, the drum—adding, “Every intoxicant is unlawful.”
It is reported by Aḥmad 1/289, in Kitāb al-Ashribah 14, al-Ṭabarānī 12601, and al-Bayhaqī 10/213–221.
The isnād is sound through both of its routes from this Qays. He was declared trustworthy by Abū Zurʿah and Yaʿqūb in al-Maʿrifah 3/194, by Ibn Ḥibbān 5/308, by al-Nasāʾī, and by Ibn Ḥajar in al-Taqrīb. Al-Dhahabī, in al-Kāshif, merely cited al-Nasāʾī’s endorsement and concurred. Accordingly, Shaykh Aḥmad Shākir judged the ḥadīth authentic in his notes on the Musnad, 4/158 and 218. Ibn Ḥazm, however, diverged, stating in al-Muḥallā 7/485 that the narrator is “unknown,” even though several reliable transmitters related from him. This report was one he overlooked; hence he did not list it among the narrations he weakened concerning the prohibition of musical instruments—similar instances will appear below.
The fourth ḥadīth: ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ—may Allah be pleased with him—reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
