it quickly caught on; copies were made, and before long it was being played in many homes. People began listening to it day and night, on every occasion and on none, until it became their pastime and constant companion. All of this stemmed only from unchecked desire and ignorance of Satan’s snares, which turned them away from attending to the Quran and even from listening to it—let alone studying it—so that, in their eyes, it became abandoned, just as the noble verse states. Al-Hafiz Ibn Kathir says in his exegesis (3/317):
“Allah the Exalted reports from His Messenger and Prophet Muhammad ﷺ that he said: ‘My Lord, my people have taken this Quran as something abandoned’ (25:30). The polytheists would neither listen to the Quran nor lend their ears to it, just as the Almighty says: ‘Those who disbelieve say, “Do not listen to this Quran; drown it out with noise”’ (41:26). Whenever the Quran was recited to them they would raise a din and talk of other things so that they would not hear it. This is one form of abandoning it. Turning away from faith in it and refusing to affirm it is another form of abandoning it. Neglecting to ponder and understand it is still another. Failing to act upon it, to observe its commands, and to avoid its prohibitions is likewise abandonment. Preferring anything else to it—poetry, speech, song, amusement, conversation, or any method derived from other sources—is yet another form of abandoning it. We therefore ask Allah, the Generous Bestower, Able to do whatever He wills, to deliver us from whatever incurs His wrath and to employ us in what pleases Him: safeguarding His Book, understanding it, and living by its dictates night and day in the manner He loves and approves. Indeed, He is Generous and Ever-Giving.”
This is the last portion that Allah, exalted is He, enabled me to revise of this treatise. May He make it beneficial to His servants. Completed in the late afternoon of Friday, the twenty-eighth of Jumada al-Akhirah, 1415 AH.
Glory be to You, O Allah, and praise is Yours. I bear witness that there is no god but You; I seek Your forgiveness and repent to You.
