Qira al-DayfIbn Abi al-Dunya

41 – Abu Saʿid al-Qurashi, a descendant of Sulayman ibn ʿAbd al-Malik, recited to me:

A wayfarer, knocking at hunger’s gate to rouse it,
His servant alert while the heart of night lay restless and torn;
For him I kindled a fire whose flint sent piercing sparks,
Beckoning the night traveler: “Come, draw near to my pot.” ⦗39⦘
When he arrived, with misery riding pillion on his saddle,
I met him with the open, cheerful face of a generous man.
I told him, “Welcome—welcome as kin;
The night will pass over you bearing only what is fair and good.”
My camel, Shawk, nearly bolted on hearing his voice,
And did not settle till evening for fear she might be slaughtered.

Ibn al-Aʿrabi said: These verses are by Abu Shibl al-Harithi.
