39 – Sulaymān ibn Abī Shaykh related to me, and Muḥammad ibn ʿUthmān al-Ṭāʾī recited for me these lines attributed to Ḥātim
(Long meter):
He howled in despair, almost like one gone mad—
Yet madness it was not, but the tactic of a need he strove to meet.
So I stirred up my fire and let its brightness show,
And I brought out my dog that had been kept inside the house.
When he saw me, he proclaimed Allah’s greatness alone,
Bringing good news to a stomach whose “birds” were fluttering with hunger.
I said to him, “Welcome, welcome indeed; you are guided aright,”
And I did not linger to interrogate him about his affairs.
I then went to the sleek, light-colored she-camel and made her ready
For the rightful meal of a guest—such was the deed I purposed.
She paced a little, then granted me of her best:
A hump swollen and heavy with fat.
I served him her liver and her hump, freshly roasted;
For the finest kindness is that which is offered without delay.
