27 – Ibrāhīm ibn Saʿīd al-Jawharī narrated to me, from Muḥammad ibn ʿUmar al-Aslamī. Muḥammad ibn Abī Ḥumayd related to me and said: ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb (may Allah Most High be pleased with him) once asked Mutammim ibn Nuwayra, “How far has your grief for your brother reached?” He replied, “For an entire year I did not sleep at night until dawn, and whenever I saw a fire burning in the darkness I thought my very soul would depart; it reminded me of my brother’s fire. He would order a blaze to be kept alight until daybreak, fearing that a traveller might pass the night nearby. If a wayfarer spotted the fire, he would head straight for the man who had kindled it. My brother would hasten to welcome the guest before anyone else in the tribe was even aware, greeting those who arrived from distant journeys with the finest hospitality.” ʿUmar said, “How noble he was!”}
