18 – Abū Zayd related to me; Abū ʿĀṣim told us; Juwairiyah b. Asmāʾ told us:
Qays b. Saʿd used to incur debts in order to feed the people. Abū Bakr and ʿUmar said, “If we leave this young man to himself, he will squander his father’s wealth.” So we went around speaking to the people about it. One day the Prophet ﷺ led his Companions in prayer, and Saʿd b. ʿUbādah, standing behind him, said, “Who will excuse me with regard to the son of Abū Quḥāfah and the son of al-Khaṭṭāb? They begrudge my son!”
١٨ - وَأَخْبَرَنِي أَبُو زَيْدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَاصِمٍ حَدَّثَنَا جُوَيْرِيَةُ بْنُ أَسْمَاءَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى عَنْهُمَا قَالَ: كَانَ قَيْسُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ يَسْتَدِينُ وَيُطْعِمُهُمْ، فَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرُ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى عَنْهُمَا: إِنْ تَرَكْنَا هَذَا الْفَتَى أَهْلَكَ مَالَ أَبِيهِ، فَمَشَيْنَا فِي النَّاسِ، فَصَلَّى النَّبِيُّ ﷺ يَوْمًا بِأَصْحَابِهِ، فَقَامَ سَعْدُ بْنُ عُبَادَةَ خَلْفَهُ فَقَالَ: مَنْ يَعْذِرُنِي مِنِ ابْنِ أَبِي قُحَافَةَ وَابْنِ الْخَطَّابِ، يُبَخِّلَانِ عَلَيَّ ابْنِي؟
