It is related that Abū Bakr ibn Ahmad ibn ʿUmar ibn Jābir, when asked about the grave of Allah’s intimate friend, peace be upon him, said: “Every shaykh whom I met affirmed the authenticity of his grave and those of his children and their wives—may Allah bless them all.”
The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, prayed for Tamīm al-Dārī concerning Habrī and its affairs before Allah, Mighty and Majestic, granted the Muslims the conquest of Syria. Tamīm came to Abū Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, who confirmed this for him. He then came to ʿUmar, who confirmed it for him after the conquests.
Abū Hind al-Dārī then related: “We came to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, in two parties: Tamīm ibn Aws, his brother Nuʿaym, Yazīd ibn Abī Qays, Abū ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbd Allāh, his brother al-Tayyib—whom the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, named ʿAbd al-Rahmān—and Fākiha ibn al-Nuʿmān. We embraced Islam and asked the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, to grant us some land in Syria. He said, ‘Ask for whatever you wish.’”
Abū Hind said: “We said, ‘To a place where Tamīm can deliberate.’ ‘I think you should ask for Jerusalem.’ Tamīm said, ‘Yes.’” Abū Hind said: “That, then, will be the dominion of the Arabs.” He replied: “I fear that this may not be secured for us.” He then said: “Let us ask him for Habrī and its district.” Abū Hind said: “Is there anything larger and more extensive?” Tamīm asked: “Where do you suggest?” He replied: “Let us ask him for al-ʿArabī, where our settlement will be established, with the traces it contains of the father of the prophets, Abraham, Allah’s intimate friend, peace be upon him.”
The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: “Would you like to tell me what you are discussing, and I will tell you?” He replied: “Tell me yourself, O Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless you and grant you peace, that faith may increase.” The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: “You intended one thing, Tamīm, while Abū Hind intended another. Excellent indeed is Abū Hind’s suggestion.”
He said: “The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, then called for a piece of tanned leather and wrote us a document, whose wording was: ‘In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Especially Merciful. This is the course adopted by Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah: if Allah grants him the land, they shall have Bayt ʿUyūn, Habrūn and al-Martūn
