—he also transmitted the report of Abū Dharr, who said: “I asked, O Messenger of Allah, how long was the interval between the Sacred Mosque and the Furthest Mosque?” He replied, “Forty years.” (1)
As for the ḥadīth of Ibn ʿUmar that the Prophet performed an ʿumrah in the month of Rajab (2), it makes clear that an eminent scholar may nonetheless forget, for the Chosen Prophet performed only four ʿumrahs:
- The first was the compensatory ʿumrah in the year following Hudaybiyyah, and that was in Ramadan;
- The second took place at the Conquest of Mecca, also in Ramadan;
- After returning from the campaign against Hawāzin he performed an ʿumrah from al-Jiʿrānah, and that was in Shawwal;
- The fourth was together with his Farewell Ḥajj.
Thus Abū Ḥātim, as you can see, was mistaken on several points.
(1) It is found in Sahih Ibn Hibban (no. 1589) and was also reported by Ahmad, 5/166-167, through the chain: Muhammad ibn Jafar → Shuʿba → Sulayman → Ibrahim al-Taymi → his father → Abu Dharr.
It was likewise transmitted by Ahmad, 5/156, 157, 160; by al-Bukhari, 6/290-291 in “The Prophets,” chapter 10, and 6/332-333; and by Muslim (no. 520) in “The Mosques,” all through various chains from al-Aʿmash → Ibrahim al-Taymi → his father → Abu Dharr.
Al-Suyuti cites it in ad-Durr al-Manthur and adds that it is also found in Ibn Abi Shayba, ʿAbd b. Humayd, and al-Bayhaqi’s Shuʿab al-Iman.
Ibn al-Qayyim comments in Zad al-Maʿad, 1/49: “This hadith has perplexed those unaware of its intent, for they object, ‘It is known that Sulayman b. Dawud built al-Masjid al-Aqsa, whereas more than a thousand years separate him from Ibrahim.’ Such a claim betrays ignorance, for Sulayman merely renovated the mosque; he did not lay its foundations. Its original builder was Yaʿqub b. Ishaq—peace be upon them—who erected it shortly after Ibrahim built the Kaʿba.”
(2) Al-Bukhari, 3/478, relates via Mujahid: “I entered the mosque with ʿUrwa b. al-Zubayr and found ʿAbd Allah b. ʿUmar sitting near ʿAʾisha’s chamber while people were performing the duha prayer. We asked him about their prayer; he said, ‘An innovation.’ Then he was asked, ‘How many ʿumras did the Prophet perform?’ He answered, ‘Four—one of them in Rajab.’ We disliked challenging him. We then heard the sound of Mother of the Believers ʿAʾisha using her tooth-stick inside the room. ʿUrwa said, ‘Mother, do you hear what Abu ʿAbd al-Rahman is claiming?’ She asked, ‘What is he saying?’ He replied, ‘He states that the Messenger of Allah performed four ʿumras, one of them in Rajab.’ She said, ‘May Allah have mercy on Abu ʿAbd al-Rahman. The Prophet never performed an ʿumra without him present, yet he never performed one in Rajab.’”
Muslim (no. 936) also records the report and adds: “Ibn ʿUmar was listening; he neither affirmed nor denied it.” Al-Nawawi remarks that Ibn ʿUmar’s silence indicates he was mistaken, had forgotten, or was uncertain. Al-Qurtubi observes that because he did not contest ʿAʾisha’s statement, he must have realized his error and accepted her correction.
