Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

Ibn Hibbān said: Anas related that incident as having taken place when the Prophet first arrived in Madinah, at which time he had eleven wives. The earlier report, by contrast, Anas narrated toward the end of the Prophet’s time in Madinah, when he had nine wives, for this act occurred on more than one occasion.

We reply: At the moment of his initial arrival he had no wife except Sawdah. Up through the fourth year after the Hijrah he never had more than four wives in total, for he consummated his marriages with Ḥafṣah and with Umm Salamah in the third year, and before them were Sawdah and ʿĀʾishah. We are unaware of any point at which he had eleven wives simultaneously.

He further said: The mention of this report invalidates the assertion of those who claim that between Ishmael and David there were a thousand

Malik reports: “The Prophet ﷺ used to visit all his wives within a single hour of the day or night, and at that time they were eleven.” The same report is found in his collection, 1/334, “Chapter: A person in a state of janabah may go out and walk in the market,” transmitted through Abd al-Ala ibn Hammad; and in al-Nasaʾi, 6/53-54, through Ismaʿil ibn Masʿud – both chains going back to Yazid ibn Zurayʿ, who said: Saʿid ibn Abi ʿAruba related to us from Qatadah, from Anas ibn Malik, that “the Prophet of God ﷺ would go around to his wives in a single night, and at that time he had nine wives.” Ibn Khuzaymah comments on the wording preserved by Muʿadh ibn Hisham – “and they were eleven” – saying: “Muʿadh ibn Hisham, from his father, is alone in mentioning the figure of eleven; Saʿid ibn Abi ʿAruba and others report it from Qatadah differently.” Ibn Hibban tried to reconcile the two versions in his Sahih by positing two distinct periods: the first early in Medina, when the Prophet supposedly had nine wives, and a later phase in which the number reached eleven. Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar objects, noting that Ibn Hibban erred when he claimed that the first situation was at the Prophet’s arrival in Medina; at that moment he had no wife other than Sawdah. He then consummated his marriage with ʿAʾishah in Medina, married Umm Salamah, Hafsah, and Zaynab bint Khuzaymah in the third and fourth years; Zaynab bint Jahsh in the fifth; Juwayriyah in the sixth; and Safiyyah, Umm Habibah, and Maymunah in the seventh. These are all the wives with whom he consummated marriage after the Hijrah, according to the most widely accepted view. As for Rayhanah, taken captive from Banu Qurayzah, Ibn Ishaq affirms that the Prophet offered to marry her and place her behind the veil, but she preferred to remain in his ownership. Most scholars state that she pre-deceased him in the year 10 A.H. Likewise, Zaynab bint Khuzaymah died shortly after her marriage to him; Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr says she stayed with him only two or three months. On this basis the total number of wives living with him at any one time never exceeded nine. In addition, Sawdah had ceded her allotted day to ʿAʾishah, as will be discussed later. The version transmitted by Saʿid is therefore the stronger. Muʿadh’s wording can be understood as counting Maria and Rayhanah with the others and designating them “his wives” by way of customary usage.
