I say: He lived for eighty years, or thereabouts.
Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Ānamī narrated to us on more than one occasion; Ibn Khalīl narrated to us; Masʿūd ibn Abī Manṣūr narrated to us—and Ahmad ibn Salāmah authorised us to transmit from Masʿūd—who said: Abū ʿAlī the reciter narrated to us; Abū Nuʿaym narrated to us; I heard Abū Isḥāq Ibrāhīm ibn Muhammad say: I heard Abū Khalīfah say: I heard ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Bakr ibn al-Rabīʿ ibn Muslim say: I heard Muhammad ibn Ziyād say: I heard Abū Hurayrah say:
“I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, ‘Men will surely leave Medina out of dislike for it, yet Medina would be better for them if they only knew.’” (1)
Using this same chain up to Abū Isḥāq ibn Ḥamzah, Abū Jaʿfar al-Ḥaḍramī narrated to us; ʿUbādah ibn Ziyād narrated to us; Yūnus ibn Abī Yaʿfūr narrated to us, from his father, who said: I heard Ibn ʿUmar say: I heard ʿUmar say:
“I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, ‘Every connection by cause or by lineage will be severed on the Day of Resurrection except my connection and my lineage.’” (2)
(1) It is cited in the Musnad, 2/302, through the chain of transmission: Abd al-Rahman – Hammad – Muhammad b. Ziyad – Abu Hurayra. The same Musnad records it again at 2/403 through two isnads: Hammad b. Salama – Muhammad b. Ziyad – Abu Hurayra; and at 2/464 through Affan – Hammad – Muhammad b. Ziyad and Ammar b. Abi Ammar – Abu Hurayra. Muslim also transmits it (no. 1381) in the Book of Hajj, chapter “Medina expels its wicked people,” from the chain Qutayba b. Saʿid – Abd al-Aziz al-Darawardi – al-ʿAlaʾ – his father – Abu Hurayra, in which the Messenger of Allah said: “A time will come when a man will summon his cousin and his kinsman, saying, ‘Come to prosperity, come to prosperity,’ yet Medina is better for them if they only knew. By Him in whose hand is my soul, no one leaves her out of dislike without Allah replacing him therein with someone better. Truly, Medina is like the bellows that expels impurity; the Hour will not be established until Medina casts out its wicked people just as the furnace removes the dross of iron.”
(2) This hadith is sound on the basis of its various chains and corroborating reports. Ibn Saʿd relates it, 8/463, through Anas b. ʿIyad al-Laythi – Jaʿfar b. Muhammad – his father, indicating that ʿUmar b. al-Khattab …, but the chain is broken. Al-Hakim records it, 3/142, through al-Sari b. Khuzayma – Muʿalla b. Rashid – Wahib b. Khalid – Jaʿfar b. Muhammad – his father – ʿAli b. al-Husayn – ʿUmar …, likewise with a break in the chain. Al-Khatib, in his Tarikh, 6/182, also transmits it through two routes from Ibrahim b. Mehran b. Rustam al-Marwazi …
