Among those who narrated from him were Abū al-Ḥusayn Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad al-Ṣaydāwī in his Muʿjam, al-Ḥasan ibn al-Layth al-Shīrāzī, Abū Bakr Muḥammad ibn Mūsā ibn Mardawayh, the judge Aḥmad ibn Isḥāq al-Nahāwandī, and a number of others.
I have not been able to locate a full biographical entry on him that meets the required standard, yet I think he remained alive until sometime after 350 AH.
He was counted among the reliable authorities—an historian as well as a poet.
His works include: Kitāb Rabīʿ al-Mutayyam fī Akhbār al-ʿUshshāq (Springtime of the Enamored: Accounts of Lovers); Kitāb al-Amthāl (Proverbs), a copy of which we have heard; Kitāb al-Nawādir (Rarities); Kitāb Risālat al-Safar (Treatise on Travel); Kitāb al-Ruqā (1) wa al-Taʿāzī (Incantations and Condolences); and Kitāb Adab al-Nāṭiq (Etiquette of the Speaker). Abū al-Qāsim Ibn Manda records in his work al-Wafayāt that he lived until close to 360 AH and died in the city of Rāmahurmuz.
We have heard his book al-Muḥaddith al-Fāṣil from Abū al-Ḥusayn ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad, from Jaʿfar ibn ʿAlī, from al-Sallafī, from Abū al-Ḥusayn ibn al-Ṭuyūrī, from Abū al-Ḥasan al-Fālī, from the judge Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Nahāwandī, from the author himself; and we possess an even higher chain of transmission for his ḥadith than this.
ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-Munʿim ibn ʿUmar told us on more than one occasion that the judge ʿAbd al-Ṣamad ibn Muḥammad related to us—in the year 609 AH, while I was present—that Shaykh Jamāl al-Islām ʿAlī ibn al-Muslim had informed him, that al-Ḥusayn ibn Ṭalab al-Khaṭīb informed him, that Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad al-Ghassānī informed him, that al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān at Rāmahurmuz informed him, that Aḥmad ibn Ḥammād ibn Sufyān informed him, that ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ḥafṣ al-Barrād informed him, that Yaḥyā ibn Maymūn informed him, that Abū al-Ashhab al-ʿAṭāridī informed him from al-Ḥasan, from Abū Ayyūb, who said:
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: “O Abū Ayyūb, shall I not direct you to a deed that Allah approves of? Reconcile people when they fall into discord, and engender affection between them when they grow to hate one another.”
