54 – Al-Ṭarāzī, Abū ʿAmr Saʿīd ibn al-Qāsim ibn al-ʿAlāʾ
The imām, ḥadith scholar, and erudite authority Abū ʿAmr Saʿīd ibn al-Qāsim ibn al-ʿAlāʾ al-Bardhaʿī—later known as al-Ṭarāzī—settled in Ṭarāz, a town of Turkistān, and made the pilgrimage late in life.
He transmitted ḥadith from Muḥammad ibn Ḥubbān ibn Azhar, Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyā ibn Manda, ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Ḥusayn al-Shāmātī, Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar al-Karābīsī, and several others.
Those who narrated from him include al-Dāraquṭnī, Abū ʿAlī ibn Faḍālah al-Rāzī, Aḥmad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Shīrāzī, and others.
Abū Nuʿaym al-Aṣbahānī said, “He was one of the ḥuffāẓ; Muḥammad ibn Ismāʿīl al-Warrāq related to us from him in Baghdad.”
Al-Ḥākim stated, “News of his death reached us in the year 362 AH.”
I have cited one of his narrations in the Tadhkirah (1).
In that same year there also died Abū Bahr al-Barbahārī and the chief Ḥanafī jurist Abū Jaʿfar Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd—

May God shower Bab al-Karkh—its fields and homes—
with the downpour of resounding clouds,
and bless all who dwell there.

(1) 3/942. The author transmits, with his own chain, the hadith reported by Abu Hurayra: “Under every hair there is janaba (major ritual impurity); therefore wash the hair and cleanse the skin.” The hadith is weak. It was narrated by Abu Dawud (248), al-Tirmidhi (106), Ibn Majah (597), and al-Bayhaqi 1/175. Its chain contains al-Harith b. Wajih al-Rasbi, who is unreliable. Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar quotes al-Shafi‘i in Talkhis 1/142: “This hadith is not sound.” Al-Bayhaqi adds that the specialists, among them al-Bukhari and Abu Dawud, declared it defective.
