ibn Abī ʿAlī, as well as Abū Saʿīd an-Naqqāsh, Abū Nuʿaym the ḥadith master, Abū Saʿd ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Aḥmad aṣ-Ṣaffār, and a group of others.
Abū Nuʿaym said: “He studied the school under Abū Bakr ibn Abī ʿĀṣim, read through his works, and he was trustworthy, adherent to the Ẓāhirī school.”
He passed away in Dhū al-Qaʿdah of 359 AH, having lived a little over ninety years.
We were informed by Aḥmad ibn al-Muʿallim; Ibn Khalīl informed us; Masʿūd al-Jammāl informed us; Abū ʿAlī al-Ḥaddād informed us; Abū Nuʿaym informed us; Aḥmad ibn Bundār narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn Zakariyyā narrated to us; Sulaymān ibn Kurān narrated to us; ʿUmar ibn Ṣahbān narrated to us, from Ibn al-Munkadir, from Jābir, who said:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Seek goodness with those of handsome countenance.” Its chain is soft (1).
43 – Abū ʿAlī al-Ṭabarī, al-Ḥasan ibn al-Qāsim*
The Imām and leading Shāfiʿī authority al-Ḥasan ibn al-Qāsim compiled al-Taʿlīqa from Abū
(1) The isnad is exceptionally weak because of Umar ibn Suhban. The author notes in al-Mizan, 3/207: Ahmad said, “He is nothing”; Yahya ibn Maʿin, “He is not worth a single fals”; al-Bukhari, “His reports are munkar”; and both Abu Hatim and al-Daraqutni judged him matruk al-hadith (abandoned as a transmitter). Regarding Sulayman ibn Karan, al-Uqayli remarks that error predominates in his narrations.
The narration also appears in Hilyat al-Awliyaʾ, 3/156, where Sulayman ibn Karan is mistakenly written as Sulayman ibn Karz.
Al-Haythami cites it in Majmaʿ al-Zawaʾid, 8/194, attributing it to al-Tabarani in al-Awsat and observing: “Its chain contains Umar ibn Suhban, who is discarded.”
