al-Balādhurī, Abū Muḥammad Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn Ibrāhīm*
The Imām, ḥāfiẓ, widely-beneficial preacher, and shaykh of the community: Abū Muḥammad Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn Ibrāhīm al-Ṭūsī, known as al-Balādhurī.
He received ḥadīth from Muḥammad ibn Ayyūb ibn al-Ḍurays, Tamīm ibn Muḥammad the ḥāfiẓ, ʿAbd Allah ibn Muḥammad ibn Shīrawayh, and their peers.
Abū ʿAbd Allah al-Ḥākim said: “He was unmatched in his time for memorization and preaching. Our shaykh, the ḥāfiẓ Abū ʿAlī, along with the rest of our teachers, used to attend his gatherings and delight in the chains of transmission he recited publicly. I never once saw them criticize him over an isnād, a name, or a ḥadīth.
He heard from a great many scholars in Iraq and Khurasan, and he produced a ‘Ṣaḥīḥ’ fashioned after Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, until he said: ‘He was martyred at Ṭabaran, the place to which he had travelled after leaving Nīshābūr, in 339 AH.’”
I say: He had also prepared selected narrations for Ḥājib al-Ṭūsī and others.
This, then, is the “younger” al-Balādhurī.
As for the “greater” al-Balādhurī, he is Aḥmad ibn Yaḥyā(1), the author of the Great History, a ḥāfiẓ, historian, and eminent scholar who met ʿAffān ibn Muslim and those after him; he belongs to the same tier as Abū Dāwūd, the author of the Sunan. -
