Al-Dāraqutnī said, “He withdrew it once I told him⦗1⦘, ‘It is fabricated.’
Al-Khaṭīb said, “Abū ʿAlī al-Kawkabī has also transmitted it from Abū Ghālib⦗2⦘.”
Al-Dāraqutnī further related that al-Naqqāsh remarked, “Kisrá is Abū Shirwān,” treating the name as a teknonym. He would pray, “May no hand that comes to you seeking a yellow coin of your bounty ever return—yet it comes back empty-handed.”
Al-Khaṭīb said, “I heard Ibn al-Faḍl al-Qaṭṭān say: ‘I was present with al-Naqqāsh while he was breathing his last on the third of Shawwāl, 351 AH. He cried out at the top of his voice, “For the like of this let the workers work!” (Q 37:61), repeating it three times. Then his soul departed⦗3⦘. May Allah have mercy on him.’”
I say: Al-Dānī relied, in al-Taysīr, on his narrations of the variant readings. Allah knows best, but my heart does not rest easy with him; to me he is suspect. May Allah pardon him.
