ʿAffān reported: Ḥammād ibn Salamah narrated to us, from ʿAṭāʾ ibn al-Sāʾib, from Abū ʿUbaydah ibn ʿAbd Allāh, from his father, who said: Allah sent His Prophet to lead people into Paradise. The Prophet ﷺ entered a church and found some Jews there. One of them was reciting the Torah; when he reached the passage describing the Prophet, he stopped. In another part of the church lay a sick man. The Prophet ﷺ asked, “Why have you stopped?” The sick man replied, “They came to the description of a prophet, so they fell silent.” The sick man then crawled over, took the Torah, and said, “Lift your hand.” He read on until he reached the description and said, “This is your description and that of your community. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that you are the Messenger of Allah.” He then died, whereupon the Prophet ﷺ said, “Wrap your brother.”
Yazīd ibn Hārūn reported: Ḥammād ibn Salamah narrated to us, from al-Zubayr Abū ʿAbd al-Salām, from Ayyūb ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Makraz, from Wābiṣah—who was al-Asadī—who said: I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ resolved not to leave any matter of righteousness or sin without asking him about it. I began stepping through the crowd, and they said, “Keep back, O Wābiṣah, from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.” I replied, “Let me come near him, for of all people he is the one I most love to approach.” He said, “Come closer, Wābiṣah.” I drew near until my knee touched his, and he said, “Wābiṣah, shall I tell you what you have come to ask me about, or will you ask me?” I said, “Tell me, O Messenger of Allah.” He said, “You have come to ask about righteousness and sin.” I replied, “Yes.” He then brought his fingers together and began pressing them against my chest, saying, “Wābiṣah, consult your heart, consult your soul. Righteousness is what puts the heart at ease and the soul at rest, while sin is what unsettles the soul and causes hesitation in the breast, even if people again and again give you their legal opinions.”
Ibn Wahb said: Maʿāwiyah related to me, from Abū ʿAbd Allāh Muḥammad al-Asadī, who heard Wābiṣah al-Asadī say: “I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to ask him about righteousness and sin,”
