Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

Al-Talamankī (1) said in his rebuttal of the Bāṭiniyya: “Ibn Masarra claimed prophethood and alleged that he had heard the Divine Speech, so it became firmly fixed in his mind that it came from Allah.”

I say: This is not really a claim of prophethood; it is simply error and ignorance.

He died in his own town after returning from Córdoba, in mid-Shaʿbān of the year 346 AH.

333 – al-Khuldī, Abū Muḥammad Jaʿfar ibn Muḥammad ibn Nuṣayr

The shaykh, the imām, the exemplar, the hadith scholar, the shaykh of the Sufis—Abū Muḥammad Jaʿfar ibn Muḥammad ibn Nuṣayr ibn Qāsim al-Baghdādī—lived in the Khuld quarter (2).

… it is held to be an absolutely perfect abode, not a place of trial or testing; yet Adam was subjected there to the greatest of tests. Only believing, God-fearing people are said to be admitted—so how did the unbelieving, accursed devil enter? It is also claimed that no act of disobedience ever occurs there, yet Adam disobeyed his Lord in the very garden he entered. And although it is described as a realm without fear or sorrow, the two parents experienced both fear and grief there. Moreover, there is no dispute that Allah created Adam on earth, and nowhere is it stated that He then moved him to heaven; had that happened, it would surely have been mentioned, for it would count among the greatest of signs. (1) Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Abd Allah al-Talamanki, from Talmanqa—the eastern frontier city of al-Andalus—was a leading authority on Qurʾanic studies and authored many valuable Sunni works, including a Treatise on the Fundamentals of Religion and a Refutation of Ibn Masarra. He died in 429/1037-38. See: al-Silah, 1/44-45; al-Dibaj al-madhhab, p. 39. (2) He was called al-Khuldi because, while sitting one day with al-Junayd, the latter was asked a question. Al-Junayd said to him, “Answer them,” and he did so. Al-Junayd then remarked, “O Khuldi, where did you get those answers?” and was left amazed. Al-Khuldi replied, “By Allah, I have never lived in Khuld (Paradise), nor did any of my forefathers.” See: al-Ansab, 5/161.
