al-Marwazī, the money-changer. He used to say, “Add fifty,” so they coined a nickname for him on that account. (1)
He heard (hadith) from Abū Qilābah al-Raqāshī, Aḥmad ibn ʿUbayd Allah al-Narsī, Abū al-Muwajjih Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr, ʿAbd al-Ṣamad ibn al-Faḍl, and Abū Ḥātim al-Rāzī, though his having heard directly from Abū Ḥātim is unconfirmed.
Those who narrated from him include Ibn ʿAdī, al-Ḥākim, Ibn Mandah, Ghunjar, Manṣūr al-Kāghadhī, and Ḥusayn ibn Muḥammad al-Māsarjisī.
He set out for Samarkand to recover an inheritance that had come to him from a servant, but died in Bukhārā in 345 AH. That is the date given by al-Ḥākim. al-Samʿānī and others, however, said that he died in 348 AH. (2) I know of no fault attributed to him.
