Abū Bakr ibn al-Muqriʾ said, “I saw him teaching hadith in Mecca during the days of al-Mufaḍḍal ibn Muḥammad al-Jandī.”
Ibn Mandah remarked, “The shaykhs of the world were five: Ibn Fāris in Isfahan, al-Aṣamm in Nishapur, Ibn al-Aʿrābī in Mecca, Khaythama in Tripoli, and Ismāʿīl al-Ṣaffār in Baghdad.”
Ibn Mardūyah and ʿAbdullāh ibn Aḥmad al-Sūdhrajānī (1) stated in their respective Histories: “He was reliable.”
Abū Shaykh reported: Abū Jaʿfar al-Khayyaṭ told us, “I was present at the death of ʿAbdullāh ibn Jaʿfar. We were sitting with him when he said, ‘The Angel of Death has arrived.’”
Then, speaking in Persian, he said, “Take my soul just as You take the soul of a man who has spent ninety years declaring: I bear witness that there is no deity but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger.” (2)
Abū Shaykh added, “I later saw ʿAbdullāh ibn Jaʿfar in a dream and asked him, ‘What has Allah done with you?’ He replied, ‘He forgave me and placed me in the stations of the prophets.’” (3)
He died in Shawwal of the year 346 AH.
