Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

Shaybān. It was then proposed to him, “Let your son Muḥammad hold the judgeship while you remain the overseer.” Accordingly, he took charge of Egypt’s affairs, dispatched deputies to the provinces, assumed supervision of the endowments, and became stern and exacting.

Later the judge Abū Ṭāhir al-Dhuhlī arrived. Ibn al-Khaṣīb and his son rode out to meet him but did not find him; when al-Dhuhlī learned of their visit he failed to return the courtesy, and hostility sprang up between them. Al-Dhuhlī subsequently performed the ḥajj and returned to Damascus, where he served as its judge.

A rift then opened between Ibn al-Khaṣīb and his son, who set himself against his father until the elder eventually withdrew. The father composed a treatise in which he refuted Ibn Jarīr.

He died in Muḥarram of the year 348 AH, in his early eighties.

We find his narrations preserved in the Khilaʿiyyāt (1).
