Abu al-Husayn al-Razi said: He held a teaching circle in the Great Mosque of Damascus where he lectured on the Awzaʿi school.
Ibn ʿAllan narrated to us, from al-Qasim ibn ʿAsakir, who said: my father narrated to us; Ibn al-Akfani narrated to us; al-Kattani narrated to us; and Tammam said:
“The judge Abu al-Hasan ibn Hadhlam used to hold a Friday gathering in his house at which he dictated traditions. We were present when he said:
‘I saw the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) in a dream, with Abu Bakr and ʿUmar at his right and ʿUthman and ʿAli at his left, all of them in my home. I approached and sat before him, and he said to me, “O Abu al-Hasan, we have missed you; have you not missed us?”’”
Tammam added: “Not a single week had passed before he died, in Shawwal 347 AH.”
Al-Kattani said: “He was the judge of Damascus, trustworthy, reliable, and of noble standing.”
Ibn Zabr said: “He died in Rabiʿ al-Awwal 347 AH at the age of eighty-nine.”
I (the author) say: Their grandfather Hadhlam had been a Christian and then embraced Islam.
