pray two rakʿahs and then say: “O Allah, I ask You and turn to You through Your Prophet Muhammad, the Prophet of mercy. O Muhammad, I turn with you to my Lord that He may remove this blindness of mine. O Allah, accept his intercession on my behalf and accept my own plea concerning myself.”

ʿUthmān [ibn Ḥunays] added: “By Allah, we had not yet dispersed, nor had the conversation gone on for long, before the man came back as though he had never suffered any impairment at all.” It was narrated by Yaʿqūb al-Fasawī and others from Aḥmad ibn Shabīb.

ʿAbd al-Razzāq said: Maʿmar told us, from Qatādah, who said: “A Jew sought to ingratiate himself with the Prophet ﷺ, so the Prophet said, ‘O Allah, beautify him.’ His hair turned so black that it became darker than anything one could imagine.”

A similar report is transmitted through Thumāmah, from Anas, which adds: “His beard turned black after it had been white.”

Saʿīd ibn Abī Maryam said: Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar ibn Abī Kathīr told us, he said: Saʿd ibn Isḥāq ibn Kaʿb ibn ʿUjrah related to me, from ʿĀṣim ibn ʿUmar ibn Qatādah, from the grandmother of Qatādah ibn al-Nuʿmān, who said:

“It was a night of intense darkness and rain, and I thought, ‘If only I could seize the opportunity to attend the late-night prayer (al-ʿatmah, i.e., ʿIshāʾ) with the Prophet ﷺ.’ So I went. When he dismissed the congregation, he noticed me while he was walking with a palm stalk (ʿurjūn) in his hand. He said, ‘O Qatādah, at this hour?’ I replied, ‘I wished to share the prayer with you.’ He handed me the palm stalk and said, ‘Satan is behind you in your household. Take this palm stalk and rely on it until you reach your home. You will find him in one corner of the house; strike him among your family with the palm stalk.’

“I left the mosque, and the palm stalk shone like a candle, giving light. By its light I made my way home and found my family asleep. I looked into the corner and there was a hedgehog; I kept striking it with the palm stalk until it went out.”

ʿĀṣim’s report from his grandfather is not connected, yet the story has also come through two other chains—from Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī and Abū Hurayrah—and the report of Abū Saʿīd is a ḥadīth
