ʿUthmān ibn Saʿīd narrated to us; Mūsā ibn Ismāʿīl narrated to us; Ḥammād ibn Salama narrated to us; Isḥāq ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Ṭalḥa informed us, from Saʿīd ibn Yasār, from Abū Hurayra, who said:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to say in his supplication: “O Allah, I seek refuge in You from poverty, scarcity, and humiliation, and I seek refuge in You from wronging others or being wronged.” (1)
Its chain of transmission is strong. Al-Ḥākim included it in the Mustadrak. Abū Dāwūd also reported it from Mūsā with the same chain. Al-Tirmidhī related it with a shorter chain that descends from Ḥammād, but because of a defect (2) Muslim did not record it. Al-Nasāʾī (3) transmitted it through several routes: from al-Awzāʿī, from the same Isḥāq, who said: from Jaʿfar ibn ʿIyāḍ, from Abū Hurayra.
277 – Abū al-Walīd the jurist, Ḥassān ibn Muḥammad *
The peerless imam, ḥāfiẓ, muftī, and shaykh of Khurāsān: Abū al-Walīd Ḥassān ibn Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad ibn Hārūn al-Nīsābūrī, the Shāfiʿī, known for his devotion.
(1) The hadith is recorded in al-Mustadrak, 1/540, where al-Hakim declares it authentic and al-Dhahabi concurs. It is also transmitted by Abu Dawud (no. 1544), al-Bayhaqi, 7/12; Ahmad, 2/305 and 325; and al-Nasaʾi, 8/261. Its chain is sound, and Ibn Hibban likewise classed it as sahih (no. 2443). After an extensive search I did not locate it in Sunan al-Tirmidhi, nor do I know of any muhaddith who attributed it to him apart from the present author; the attribution is therefore probably an oversight on his part.
(2) An additional phrase has been supplied to fit the flow of the text.
(3) Al-Nasaʾi, 8/266. His exact words are: “Al-Awzaʿi differed; he said: Maḥmud b. Khalid informed us—al-Walid narrated from Abu ʿAmr al-Awzaʿi—‘Ishaq b. ʿAbd Allah narrated to me—Jaʿfar b. ʿIyad narrated to me—Abu Hurayra narrated….’ Al-Walid was a mudallis and uses the ʿan-formula here, yet he explicitly says ‘he narrated to us’ in Ibn Hibban (no. 2442). The report is also found in Ibn Majah (no. 3842) and al-Hakim, 1/531, through the route of Muhammad b. Musʿab al-Qurqusai who said: ‘Al-Awzaʿi narrated to us….’ Al-Hakim judged the chain to be authentic, and al-Dhahabi agreed, even though Muhammad b. Musʿab is known for frequent mistakes.
