The Twentieth Generation
276 – Abū al-Naḍr al-Ṭūsī, Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad ibn Yūsuf *
The Imām, ḥāfiẓ, jurist, erudite scholar, exemplar, and Shaykh al-Islām: Abū al-Naḍr Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad ibn Yūsuf al-Ṭūsī, a Shāfiʿī and the foremost authority of the school in Khurāsān.
He was born sometime around 250 AH.
He heard ḥadith from: ʿUthmān ibn Saʿīd al-Dārimī, al-Ḥārith ibn Abī Usāmah, Ismāʿīl the judge, ʿAlī ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz al-Baghawī, al-Faḍl ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Khurram al-Yashkurī al-Harawī, Aḥmad ibn Mūsā al-Kūfī al-Ḥammār, Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr Qashmard al-Ḥarashī, Muḥammad ibn Ayyūb ibn al-Ḍurays, Aḥmad ibn Salamah the ḥāfiẓ, al-Ḥusayn ibn Muḥammad al-Qabbānī, Tamīm ibn Muḥammad the ḥāfiẓ, and Muḥammad ibn Naṣr al-Marwazī the jurist.
He kept the company of the last-mentioned for an extended period and transmitted copiously from him.
He compiled and authored works, produced a mustakhraj on Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, and was—without dispute—one of the leading imams of Khurāsān.
