Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

Rawāḥah informed us; al-Silafī informed us; Aḥmad ibn al-Ḥasan al-Ṣūfī in Mecca informed us; ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Muḥammad al-Ḥākim in Tūs informed us; Abū Bakr Aḥmad ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Akhras informed us; Abū Muslim Ghālib ibn ʿAlī al-Rāzī informed us; Muḥammad ibn Ismāʿīl al-Nasafī informed us; ʿAbd al-Muʾmin ibn Khalaf informed us; Yaḥyā ibn al-Mustafād informed us; Wahb ibn Jaʿfar informed us; Junādah ibn Marwān al-Ḥimṣī informed us; al-Ḥārith ibn al-Nuʿmān informed us—he said: I heard Anas ibn Mālik say:

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Among My servants are those who, were they to ask Me for Paradise in its entirety, I would grant it to them; yet were they to ask Me for no more than the strap of a whip (1) I would not grant it, for I wish to store it up for them in the Hereafter (2).”

This is a singular, repudiated hadith; its chain contains a narrator who is unknown.

274 – al-Ṣibghī, Aḥmad ibn Isḥāq ibn Ayyūb al-Naysābūrī*
The Imām, erudite scholar, jurist-consult, hadith master, Shaykh al-Islām: Abū Bakr Aḥmad ibn Isḥāq ibn Ayyūb ibn Yazīd al-Naysābūrī, a Shāfiʿī, better known as al-Ṣibghī (3).

He was born in the year 258 AH.

(1) The ʿalaqa of the whip is the leather strap fixed to its handle. (2) Junada ibn Marwan was declared unreliable by Abu Hatim—who is, in fact, his own teacher in this chain. Abu Hatim said, “He is not strong,” while al-Bukhari classified his hadith as munkar (objectionable). (*) Al-Ansab, 8:33–34; al-Ibar, 2:258–59; al-Wafi bi-l-wafayat, 6:239; Mirat al-jinan, 2:334; Tabaqat al-Shafiʿiyya, 3:9–12; al-Nujum al-zahira, 3:310; Shadharat al-dhahab, 2:361. (3) The nisba is pronounced al-Sibghi: with a kasra on the initial s, a sukun on the ya, and ending with gh, and it refers to sibgh (dyeing). In al-Ibar it was misprinted as al-Dubaiʿi. Ibn al-Imad, in Shadharat, went further and vocalized it al-Dubaiʿi, claiming—mistakenly, and attributing the view to al-Suyuti—that it relates to Dubayʿa ibn Qays.
