He narrated in Baghdad from al-Ḥasan ibn Muḥammad al-Zaʿfarānī, ʿAlī ibn Ḥarb, Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Malik al-Daqīqī, ʿAbbās al-Turqufī, Aḥmad ibn Manṣūr al-Ramādī, and a number of others.
Among those who transmitted from him were Ibn Razqūyah, Abū ʿAlī ibn Shādhān, al-Ḥusayn ibn ʿUmar ibn Burhān, and several others besides.
Al-Khaṭīb said, “I have seen some of our companions fault him without any proof, whereas all his hadiths are sound except for one report in which he confused the chain and his claim of hearing it from ʿAlī ibn Ḥarb in Sāmarrāʾ.” (1)
He was born in 248 AH.
He said, “They carried me to al-Ḥasan ibn ʿArafah in the year 256. He said, ‘al-Muḥāribī narrated to us,’ but I forgot the remainder.” (2)
Muḥammad ibn Yūsuf al-Qaṭṭān said, “He is reliable, though he did his hearing while still a boy.” (3)
I say: He lived on until 344 or 345 AH.
