Abu ʿAli ibn al-Khallal informed us; Jaʿfar ibn ʿAli informed us; Abu Tahir as-Silafi informed us; Ismaʿil ibn Mak informed us; Abu Yaʿla al-Khalili informed us; Muhammad ibn al-Hasan ibn al-Mughira and al-Husayn ibn Jaʿfar narrated to us, saying:
Isḥaq ibn Ibrahim, the ḥāfiẓ, narrated to us; Hilal ibn al-ʿAlaʾ narrated to us; Muhammad ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿla as-Sanʿani narrated to us; al-Mughira ibn Sulayman—on the authority of ʿUbayd Allah ibn ʿUmar, from Hisham, from his father, from ʿAʾisha—reported that she said:
“The Quraysh and those who followed them used to say, ‘We are the residents of the House; we do not perform the dispersal (ifadah) except from Mina.’ Thereupon Allah, exalted is He, revealed: ‘Then depart from where the people depart’ (Q 2:199). 1”
This is a singular (gharib) report. 2
266 – Qasim ibn Aṣbag ibn Muhammad ibn Yusuf ibn Nasih *
It is also said that his name is Wadiḥ instead of Nasih; this matter needs verification.
(1) Quran, Surah al-Baqara, 2:199.
(2) Al-Bukhari transmitted the report under nos. 1665 (Book of Hajj) and 4520 (Tafsir); Muslim 1219; al-Tirmidhi 884; Ibn Majah 318; al-Tabari 3831; Abu Dawud 1910; al-Nasai 5/255; and al-Bayhaqi 5/113, all through several chains from Hisham ibn Urwa, with the wording: “Quraysh and those who followed their religion—known as al-hums—used to halt at Muzdalifah, saying, ‘We are qatin Allah (God’s household).’ Everyone else would stand at Arafat, whereupon God revealed: ‘Then flow forth from where the people flow forth’ (2:199).” This is al-Tirmidhi’s version. Al-Suyuti cites it in al-Durr al-manthur 1/226 and further attributes it to Ibn al-Munzir, Ibn Abi Hatim, and Abu Nuaym in Dalail. Al-Tirmidhi comments: “The Meccans would not leave the Haram, whereas Arafat lies outside it, so they stayed at Muzdalifah saying, ‘We are God’s household,’ while the rest stood at Arafat; therefore God revealed the verse. Al-hums refers to the inhabitants of the sanctuary.”
