265 – al-Baḥrī, Isḥāq ibn Ibrāhīm ibn Muḥammad al-Jurjānī *
He was an imam, a ḥāfiẓ, and an unimpeachable authority—the leading hadith scholar of Jurjān in his time—Abū Yaʿqūb Isḥāq ibn Ibrāhīm ibn Muḥammad al-Jurjānī, known as “al-Baḥrī.”
He studied under Muḥammad ibn Bissām; Abū Yaḥyā ibn Abī Masarrah al-Makkī; Abū Qilābah ar-Raqāshī; Hilāl ibn al-ʿAlāʾ ar-Raqī; al-Ḥārith ibn Abī Usāmah; Isḥāq ibn Ibrāhīm ad-Dabarī; Bishr ibn Mūsā; and others of their standing.
Among those who transmitted from him were Ibn ʿAdī, Abū Bakr al-Ismāʿīlī, an-Nuʿmān ibn Muḥammad al-Jurjānī, Ḥusayn ibn Jaʿfar, Abū Naṣr ibn al-Ismāʿīlī, and many others.
Al-Khalīlī said, “He is a reliable ḥāfiẓ of acknowledged reputation; four men from Jurjān related hadith to me on his authority.” (1)
Al-Ḥākim Ibn al-Bayyiʿ stated, “He sent me a written authorization (ijazah) from Jurjān, which I still keep.”
I say: Abū Yaʿqūb al-Baḥrī, the ḥāfiẓ, died in 337 AH.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was perfumed for his state of ihram when he first entered it, and again for his release from ihram after he had thrown the stones at Jamrat al-‘Aqaba, before performing the circumambulation of the Ka‘ba. This report is found in 6/244 through the isnad of Ibn Jurayj who said: ‘Umar b. ‘Abd Allah b. ‘Urwah told me that he heard ‘Urwah and al-Qasim relate from ‘Aisha: “I perfumed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with my own hands using dharirah on the Farewell Pilgrimage—once for ihram when he entered it, and once after he had thrown the stones at Jamrat al-‘Aqaba on the Day of Sacrifice, before he circumambulated the House.” The chain is authentic. I add: The permissibility of perfuming after the stoning of Jamrat al-‘Aqaba and before shaving and tawaf is also held by ‘Ata, Malik, Abu Thawr, and Abu Yusuf, and is one of the narrated positions of Imam Ahmad, validated by Ibn Qudamah in al-Mughni 3/439.
