scant knowledge and ill intent. Thereafter Allah disgraces them: their ignorance, caprice, and confusion about what little they do know become obvious. We therefore beseech Allah for success and sincerity.
This Imām died in the year 345 AH.
In that same year there also passed away: the musnid of his day, Abū Bakr Aḥmad ibn Sulaymān ibn Ayyūb al-ʿAbbādanī; the ḥadīth scholar Abū al-Qāsim Ismāʿīl ibn Yaʿqūb ibn al-Jirrāb al-Baghdādī, in Egypt, at a little over eighty years of age; the muhaddith of Marw, Abū Aḥmad Bakr ibn Muḥammad ibn Ḥamdān al-Ṣayrafī al-Dukhamasīnī; the leading Shāfiʿī jurist Abū ʿAlī al-Ḥasan ibn al-Ḥusayn ibn Abī Hurayrah al-Baghdādī; the musnid of Egypt, Abū ʿAmr ʿUthmān ibn Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad al-Samarqandī; the erudite ascetic Abū ʿUmar al-Zāhid Ghulām Thaʿlab; the ḥadīth scholar Abū Bakr Muḥammad ibn al-ʿAbbās ibn Najīḥ; the vizier Abū Bakr Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī ibn Aḥmad ibn Rustum al-Mādārāʾī, in Egypt, at eighty-eight years of age; the muhaddith Mukram ibn Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn Mukram, judge of Baghdad; and the author of Murūj al-Dhahab, Abū al-Ḥasan ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥusayn al-Masʿūdī.
Judge Tāj al-Dīn ʿAbd al-Khāliq ibn ʿAbd al-Salām related to us in 693 AH at Baalbek, saying: Imām ʿAbd Allah ibn Aḥmad narrated to us—
Sungur ibn ʿAbd Allah al-Halabī and ʿAbd al-Laṭīf ibn Yūsuf al-Lughawī both narrated to us, saying:
Abū Zurʿah ibn Ṭāhir narrated to us; Abū Manṣūr Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥusayn narrated to us; al-Qāsim ibn Abī al-Mundhir narrated to us; Abū al-Ḥasan ʿAlī ibn Ibrāhīm narrated to us; Abū ʿAbd Allah Ibn Mājah narrated to us; Aḥmad ibn Manīʿ narrated to us; Marwān ibn Shujāʿ narrated to us; Sālim al-Aftaṣ narrated from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ʿAbbās—who traced it back to the Prophet—he said:
“Healing is in three things: a drink of honey, the stroke of a cupping blade, and cauterisation with fire; yet I forbid my community to resort to cauterisation.”
