—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—who said, “Indeed Allah has made the food of the son of Adam a parable for this world.” (1)
- Al-Ṣaffār, Ismāʿīl ibn Muḥammad ibn Ismāʿīl
The imam, grammarian, man of letters, and leading musnid of Iraq: Abū ʿAlī Ismāʿīl ibn Muḥammad ibn Ismāʿīl ibn Ṣāliḥ al-Baghdādī, known as al-Ṣaffār, al-Mulahī—so called for his works on witty anecdotes and rarities.
He was born in 247 AH.
He heard ninety-four hadith from al-Ḥasan ibn ʿArafah and also studied with Zakariyyā ibn Yaḥyā ibn Asad, Saʿdān ibn Naṣr, Muḥammad ibn ʿUbayd Allāh ibn al-Munādī, Aḥmad ibn Manṣūr al-Ramādī, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Muḥammad Kur Buzān, and several others.
He was a close companion of Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Mubarrad and transmitted extensively from him.
Those who narrated from him include: al-Dāraquṭnī, Ibn al-Muẓaffar, Ibn Manda, Abū ʿUmar ibn Mahdī, ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Muḥammad al-Saqaṭī, Abū al-Ḥasan ibn Razquwayh, Abū al-Ḥusayn ibn Bishrān, Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥusayn ibn al-Faḍl al-Qaṭṭān, ʿAbd Allāh ibn Yaḥyā ibn ʿAbd al-Jabbār al-Sukkārī, Abū al-Ḥusayn ibn Makhlad, and many others besides them.
(1) The hadith is also reported by al-Tabarani in al-Muʿjam al-Kabir, no. 531; by ʿAbd Allah b. Ahmad in the Zawaʾid al-Musnad, 5/136; and by al-Bayhaqi in al-Zuhd al-Kabir through the chain of transmission: Abu Hudhayfa Musa b. Masʿud → Sufyan → Yunus b. ʿUbayd → al-Hasan → ʿAti → Ubayy b. Kaʿb. Al-Haythami comments in Majmaʿ al-zawaʾid, 10/288: “Its transmitters are those of the authentic collections, except ʿAti, and he is reliable.” Ibn Hibban declared it sound (Sahih Ibn Hibban, no. 2489). Musa b. Masʿud is corroborated by a parallel isnad in Ibn Abi al-Dunya, al-Juʿ, 8/2/9. A supporting narration from Dahhak b. Sufyan al-Kilabi is found in Ahmad, 3/452, and in al-Tabarani, no. 8138; its chain contains ʿAli b. Zayd b. Jurayjan, who is weak, while the remaining transmitters are trustworthy. Another supporting report from Salman appears in al-Tabarani, no. 6119, whose transmitters are those of the authentic collections, as noted by al-Haythami. Accordingly, the hadith is judged authentic.
