He heard ḥadith from Abū Ḥātim al-Rāzī and his contemporaries in al-Rayy; from Yaḥyā ibn Abī Ṭālib; from Abū Qilābah ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Muḥammad and their peers in Baghdad; and from Ibrāhīm ibn Dayzīl in Hamadhān.
He was trustworthy, precise, well-versed, sharp-minded, and a celebrated author.
Among those who narrated from him were Aḥmad ibn ʿAlī ibn Lāl, Aḥmad ibn Ṭāhir ibn al-Najm al-Mayānajī, and others.
He passed away in 339 AH, having lived beyond the age of eighty.
Abū al-Rabīʿ Sulaymān ibn Qudāmah al-Ḥākim informed us, saying: Jaʿfar ibn ʿAlī informed us; Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad, the son of the ḥāfiẓ, informed us; ʿAlī ibn Aḥmad al-Zanjarānī the jurist informed us; Judge ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAlī al-Sufanī in Ardabīl informed us; Yaḥyā ibn Muḥammad al-Jaʿdawī narrated to us; Ḥafṣ ibn ʿUmar the ḥāfiẓ narrated to us; Abū Ḥātim narrated to us; Thābit ibn Muḥammad al-Zāhid narrated to us; al-Ḥārith ibn al-Nuʿmān narrated to us, from Anas ibn Mālik, who said:
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘O Allah, cause me to live as a poor man and resurrect me in the company of the poor.’”
ʿĀʾishah asked, “Why is that, O Messenger of Allah?” He replied, “Because they will enter Paradise forty years before the rich,” and he mentioned the remainder of the report.
Thābit ibn Muḥammad al-Zāhid, the shaykh of al-Bukhārī, is the sole transmitter of this ḥadith.
As for this al-Ḥārith ibn al-Nuʿmān, al-Bukhārī said, “His ḥadith are munkar (unacceptable).” (1)
I say: Ibn Mājah and al-Tirmidhī have narrated on his authority in their respective books.
