The erudite, widely-beneficial imam, the prominent leader Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Baluyah al-Jallab al-Naysaburi was one of the notable figures of his city. His father took him on journeys, and he heard hadith from Muhammad ibn Ghalib Tamṭam, Muhammad ibn Ribh al-Bazzaz, Muhammad ibn Yunus al-Kudaymi, Bishr ibn Musa, and Musa ibn al-Hasan al-Julajili.
Among those who narrated from him were Abu ʿAli al-Hafiz, Ibn Manda, al-Hakim, and several others.
Al-Hakim said: I heard him relate, “Ibn Khuzaymah said to me, ‘News has reached me that you wrote down Muhammad ibn Jarir al-Tabari’s Tafsir?’ I replied, ‘Yes, I wrote the entire work from dictation,’ so he borrowed it from me.”
Al-Hakim also said: I heard him say, “I transcribed three hundred fascicles from ʿAbd Allah ibn Ahmad ibn Hanbal.”
Al-Hakim further stated: He died in Rajab 340 AH.
