as well as Abū al-Ḥasan al-ʿAlawī, Abū Ṭāhir Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad ibn Maḥmish, and others.
Among those who died that same year were: the long-lived Abū Bakr Aḥmad ibn Sulaymān ibn Zabbān al-Dimashqī, who claimed to have heard from Hishām ibn ʿAmmār; the prolific author, the Egyptian grammarian Abū Jaʿfar Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn Ismāʿīl ibn al-Naḥḥās; the Qur’an-reciter of Syria Abū Isḥāq Ibrāhīm ibn ʿAbd al-Razzāq al-Anṭākī; the hadith authority of Damascus Abū Isḥāq Ibrāhīm ibn Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad ibn Abī Thābit al-Sāmarī; the Shāfiʿī mufti and leading traditionist of Damascus Abū ʿAlī al-Ḥasan ibn Ḥabīb al-Ḥiṣāʾirī—who died in the teens of the century; the preacher-traditionist Abū al-Ḥasan ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad al-Miṣrī in Baghdad; and the ascetic jurist Abū ʿAbd Allah Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn Dīnār al-Naysābūrī, an upright authority.
I read—while at the house of Aḥmad ibn Hibat Allah—from Zaynab al-Shaʿriyya. She informed us that ʿAlī ibn Jāmiʿ al-Kātib told us; ʿAbd al-Malik ibn ʿAbd Allah al-Dashtī narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Ziyādī related to us; ʿAlī ibn Hamshādh al-ʿAdl transmitted to us; and ʿAlī ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz reported that ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Ṣāliḥ narrated to them, saying: ʿAlī ibn Mūsā al-Riḍā told us; my father narrated to me from Jaʿfar ibn Muḥammad, from his father, from ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥusayn, from his father, from ʿAlī, who said:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Faith is knowledge in the heart, affirmation by the tongue, and action with the limbs.” (1)
In the chain the name occurs as ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Ṣāliḥ, but it should be ʿAbd al-Salām. (2) The report is weak.
This is one of the narrations for which Ibn Mājah was criticized: he included it in his collection, relating it from an unnamed intermediary who reported it from the same transmitter.
