Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

Al-Manṣūr Ismāʿīl (1) sought to appoint him as the chief judge of al-Qayrawān, but he refused.

He used to complete the recitation of the Quran every night in his mosque. One night he saw a light emerge from the wall, and a voice said, “Be filled with the radiance of my face, for I am your Lord.” He spat at it and said, “Away with you, accursed one,” whereupon the light was extinguished (2).

Al-Manṣūr reasoned that Abū Maysarah did not deem rebellion against him permissible, so he wished to entrust him with the judiciary. Abū Maysarah replied, “How can a blind man who urinates beneath himself assume the office of judge?”

No one had known of this infirmity of his until that day. He then prayed, “O Allah, You know that I devoted myself to You while still a youth; so do not give them power over me.” The ʿAsr (afternoon) prayer had not yet arrived before he had departed to the hereafter (3).

Al-Manṣūr sent a burial shroud and perfume for him.

He was known for having his supplications answered (4).

He died in 338 AH.

A man once said, “My brother, the benefit of meeting is to pray for one another; so supplicate for me whenever you remember me, and I will supplicate for you whenever I remember you. In this way it will be as though we had met, even if we never meet” (5).
